Value of Charleston No. 103 Fisher 1812 Slave Hire Badge

The Fisher badges were not quite as common to see since there were less fisher jobs available. This badge features a nice, hand-engraved number in the center with the city name above, and surrounded by two stars. This badge was produced by John J. Lafar who severed as the City Marshall for the city of Charleston. He not only produced the tags, but also enforced them. In the years previous to 1812, the diamond shape had not been used and this was, in fact, the first year it was being introduced. This combination of rare date and rare occupation makes this Slave Hire Badge a good find.

The obverse of the token reads, Charleston No. 103 Fisher 1812. The obverse of the Hire Badge shows the position, location, and the slave’s individual number. The backs of all badges are blank.

Slave Hire Badges can be worth a great deal. However, be cautious of fakes and reproductions. The market is flooded with these since they are so popular. To have your badge authenticated, please contact one of our experts and they would be happy to assist you.
