The Martin Van Buren medals were created with minimal issues compared to the Andrew Jackson medals. The completed dies were sketched out by Moritz Furst, weeks after Van Buren’s inauguration. The medals were entirely completed by 1839. The obverse of this medals displays a bust of Van Buren, facing to the right. He wears a high necked suit, but lacks the drape around his midsection that was seen on the first medal. The legend reads, “MARTIN VAN BUREN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES A.D. 1837.” The reverse displays two hands shaking below a peace pipe and tomahawk. The legend reads, “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.” The reverse design was a popular one on medals struck between 1809-1849. This is the final and smallest Van Buren medal of the set of three.
