The obverse text on this So-Called Dollar reads Bombardment of Fort Sumter, April 12 & 13, 1861 and the reverse text is Fort Sumter was evacuated, with all the honors of war after a most heroic defense by Majr.. Anderson, with a garrison of 75 men, against a terrific bombardment of 30 hours duration, by the So. Ca Rebels numbering 8000. The front side of the coin shows Fort Sumter to the lower left with cannon fire and clouds of smoke above. The water is below and inscriptions circle above and below. The backside of the coin depicts decorative and descriptive text telling of the battle at Fort Sumter.
