This medal is known as the Japanese Embassy medal. The obverse was created by Anthony Paquet after the previous Japanese Embassy medal obverse die was broken. The obverse features an image of President James Buchanan, facing to the right. The legend reads, “JAMES BUCHANAN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. PAQUET F.” The reverse features a wreath surrounding the legend which reads, “IN COMMEMORATION OF THE FIRST EMBASSY FROM JAPAN TO THE UNITED STATES 1860; PAQUET.”
