This medal commemorates Memorial Hall in Philadelphia. The obverse displays an image of the hall. Around it the legend reads, “MEMORIAL HALL; TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES PHILA JULY 4, 1876.” The reverse displays Independence Hall. The legend and exergue around the image reads, “PROCLAIM LIBERTY THROUGHOUT THE LAND AND UNTO ALL THE PEOPLE THEREOF; INDEPENDENCE HALL JULY 4 1776. PATD. FEBRY. 10. 1874.” Records state that 20 silver and 500 bronze medals were struck between 1875-76. An additional 400 bronze medals were struck in late 1876 and were eventually melted down in mid 1891.
