The rectangular shaped Assay medal for 1901 commemorates William McKinley’s first term as President. Obverse displays a bust of McKinley, facing to the left wearing a suit and bow tie. The legend reads, “William McKinley” above the bust and in exergue, “President of the United States”. The reverse is similar to the reverse of 1891 and features a workman in an assay furnace. Behind the workman are rows of tools. The legend reads, “Mint of the United States Annual Assay 1901”. According to records, forty silver metals were struck and several bronze and silver metals were restruck between 1905-1907.
