History, Information, and Value of 1867-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1867-S $20 Double Eagle

The obverses of most 1867-S double eagles are softly struck over the high points of Libertys portrait, the stars encircling the periphery and/or the digits 67 in the date. Striking quality for the reverse is usually better, although sometimes the shield and inner wing feathers are incomplete. Surfaces are usually heavily abraded and, when present at all, luster for this issue tends to be subdued with minimal vibrancy to a satiny or moderately frosty texture. The 1867-S is generally obtainable in circulated grades, typically VF or EF, although in AU the issue is scarce and underrated, particularly with above average surface preservation and eye appeal. This is a rare issue in Mint State, the finest certified being a single MS-63 at NGC.
