History, Information, and Value of 1871 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1871 $20 Double Eagle

This is a well produced issue by Type 2 Liberty Head double eagle standards with most examples boldly to sharply struck throughout. High grade coins are highly lustrous with a frosty, satiny or, more rarely, semi-prooflike finish. Most survivors are heavily abraded, although a few relatively smooth pieces are known, and they usually command a strong premium when offered in the market. The 1871 double eagle has the lowest circulation strike mintage of any Type 2 Liberty Head double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, and it is scarce to rare in all grades. The typical survivor grades EF or low end AU. Mint State examples are very rare, the finest of which are a small number of MS-64s known to PCGS and NGC. The Proof 1871 double eagle is rarer still with just eight to 12 coins believed extant.
