History, Information, and Value of 1873-CC Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1873-CC $20 Double Eagle

This is a well struck issue by early Carson City Mint standards, and the typical example displays only minor softness of detail to Liberty’s hair curls, a few of the obverse stars, the eagle’s tail feathers on the reverse, and/or some of the stars encircling the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Almost all survivors are moderately to heavily abraded, and the few high grade pieces known exhibit light luster in a light satin or faintly prooflike finish. The 1873-CC is one of the rarest Carson City Mint double eagles and even VF and EF coins are scarce. AU examples are very scarce and enjoy strong demand among advanced collectors. In Mint State the 1873-CC double eagle is very rare with most such pieces grading MS-60 or MS-61. The single MS-63 listed at PCGS ranks as finest certified.
