History, Information, and Value of 1873 Open 3 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1873 Open 3 $20 Double Eagle

Due to the high mintage, striking quality varies for the 1873 Open 3 double eagle, but the typical example displays bold to sharp detail throughout the design. Surface preservation ranges from heavily abraded to relatively smooth by the standards of the type. High grade coins show pleasing luster in a satin or softly frosted texture. The 1873 Open 3 is the most plentiful Type 2 Liberty Head double eagle, and it is obvious that the vast majority of the 1,709,825 coins struck for this date display the Open 3 date logotype. This issue is readily obtainable in circulated grades and, with several thousand examples known. It is also easily acquired in lower Uncirculated grades through MS-62. Choice survivors are rare, however, and it is all but unobtainable in Gem Mint State. Both PCGS and NGC report having certified a single example in MS-65+; both entries may represent the same coin.
