History, Information, and Value of 1875-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1875-S $20 Double Eagle

Apart from characteristic softness of detail to the high points of Liberty’s hair, the 1875-S double eagle is a well struck double eagle with most examples bold to sharp in overall detail. A few relatively smooth coins are known, but the typical survivor is moderately to heavily abraded. In high grades the 1875-S has excellent luster that is either frosty or, less often, satiny in texture. Thanks to the widespread repatriation of coins from foreign holdings, the 1875-S is one of the most common double eagles of this type in grades from VF through MS-62. Like all Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles, however, the 1875-S is seldom offered in Choice Mint State, particularly in MS-64, at which level it is very rare. A breathtakingly beautiful MS-67 certified by PCGS is the finest known not only for the date and mintmark, but also for the type as a whole.
