History, Information, and Value of 1876 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1876 $20 Double Eagle

This well struck issue is often represented by coins that are boldly to sharply defined on both sides. Any softness of strike tends to be very minor and confined to the highest elements of Liberty’s hair in and around the center of the obverse. Frosty or satiny surfaces predominate among high grade survivors, although a few semi-prooflike examples are known. In keeping with the standards of the type, most 1876 double eagles show numerous abrasions. The 1876 is one of the most plentiful Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles and can be obtained with ease in all grades from VF through MS-62. Even in MS-63 this issue is relatively obtainable by the standards of the type, although such pieces are scarce in an absolute sense. The 1876 is rare in MS-64, and a single MS-65 listed at PCGS ranks as the finest certified. Although not quite as rare as the Proof 1874 and 1875, the Proof 1876 is still very rare with no more than a dozen coins accounted for in all grades.
