As with the 1878-S and 1879-S, the 1880-S double eagle tends to show minor softness of detail on the obverse over the high points of Libertys portrait and the surrounding stars. The reverse is usually well struck. Satiny or frosty luster characterizes most high grade survivors, with the typical piece heavily abraded irrespective of level of preservation. One should have little difficulty locating an 1880-S double eagle in grades from VF to MS-62. The prevalence of heavily bagmarked coins among the survivors limits the number of Choice and Gem examples, although a couple of truly outstanding pieces are known, with NGC listing one grading event each in MS-65 * and MS-66 *.
