History, Information, and Value of 1883-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1883-S $20 Double Eagle

This is one of the more sharply struck San Francisco Mint double eagles from the late 1870s/early 1880s, and it also displays strong luster at higher levels of preservation. The typical survivor is moderately to heavily abraded, but no more so than one should expect for a Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle issue that saw extensive commercial use. The 1883-S double eagle is plentiful in all grades from VF through MS-62, and even MS-63s can be obtained without undue effort on the part of the buyer. Few examples have been graded higher by the leading third party certification services, however, the finest a solitary MS-64+ known to PCGS.
