The typical 1885-CC double eagle will show one or more areas of incomplete striking detail, more on the obverse than on the reverse. Original high grade survivors are highly lustrous with either a frosty or prooflike finish. Abrasions are prevalent on extant examples, attesting to the extensive commercial use seen by this issue. As the small mintage might imply, the 1885-CC is scarce to rare in all grades. Survivors are usually EF or AU, rarely Mint State, and this issue is unknown above MS-63. The 1885-CC is the final Carson City Mint double eagle produced prior to 1889.
