History, Information, and Value of 1887 Morgan Dollar

Value of 1887-S Morgan Silver Dollar

A carefully selected 1887-S Morgan Silver Dollar will be a delight to own. Usually well struck and very attractive, this date and mint is scarce for the series. Many dollars were put into circulation in the late 19th century, after which bags were stored at the San Francisco Mint and later distributed in the 1940s and 1950s in sealed bags of 1,000 $1 coins, available at face value. The 1887-S is common in worn grades up to and including AU-58. No proofs were produced at this mint.
Easy Coin to Access, Especially in the Higher Grades: Usually available in all circulated grades including the upper end of the AU scale.
May be Tough to Track Down a Perfect Coin Due to Storage: Many examples of the date remained in storage at the San Francisco Mint for decades, leaving many Mint State survivors somewhat “baggy” in appearance from constant contact with other coins. A pleasing MS-63 with good luster and a crisp strike on both sides is an ideal selection for a growing Morgan dollar collection, and typically worth more than a dull coin.

The obverse text on the Morgan Dollar reads “Liberty; E Pluribus Unum; 1887.” The reverse text on the Liberty dollar reads “United States of America; In God We Trust; One Dollar; S.” The obverse of the silver one dollar coin has a bust of a female facing the left wearing a cap and small crown, with flowers tucked in her hair and stars surrounding the border. The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle in the center with its wings spread and a wreath surrounding.
