Most 1888-S double eagles are boldly struck with Mint State examples also having excellent luster quality. While the typical example is moderately to heavily abraded, diligent searching can be rewarded with a relatively smooth-looking coin. It is not at all difficult to locate an example of this issue in grades up to and including MS-63, although in MS-64 the 1888-S is somewhat scarce, especially when compared to the common date Type 3 Liberty Head double eagles of later years. The finest certified survivors are graded MS-64+ and MS-65, and they are rare.
