History, Information, and Value of 1891 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1891 $20 Double Eagle

This sharply struck double eagle is also characterized by excellent luster quality that is always semi or fully prooflike. When encountered at all, survivors of this issue tend to be moderately or heavily abraded. As the mintage might imply, the 1891 double eagle is a highly regarded rarity. Fewer than 100 coins are believed extant, almost all of which are in circulated grades from VF to AU. Mint State survivors are exceedingly rare, the finest of which is a PCGS MS-64 that hails from Stacks and Sothebys joint sale of the Dallas Bank Collection in October 2001. Proofs of this date are also rarities, not quite to the same extent as those of 1890, yet highly elusive in their own right with only 25 to 30 coins extant.
