History, Information, and Value of 1891-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1891-S $20 Double Eagle

While most 1891-S double eagles are sharply struck, a few exhibit minor lack of detail here and there around the obverse periphery. Mint State examples are usually highly lustrous in either a satin or frosty texture. Scattered handling marks are almost always seen, and many survivors are extensively abraded. Common in circulated grades, the 1891-S is also easily obtained in Uncirculated condition from MS-60 to MS-63. This issue is somewhat scarce in MS-64, although such pieces can be acquired without much effort on the part of the buyer.
At the Gem Mint State grade level, PCGS and NGC combined have certified only a few examples in MS-65 with none finer.
