History, Information, and Value of 1896 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1896 $20 Double Eagle

Most 1896 double eagles are sharply struck, liberally abraded and, in Mint State, have excellent luster in a satin or frosty texture. One of several common double eagles from the 1890s, the 1896 has a generous surviving population in both circulated and Mint State grades through MS-63. Near-Gems in MS-64s are scarcer, yet still obtainable by the standards of this type. Rare any finer, although there are a few outstanding condition rarities, including one or two coins certified MS-67 by NGC. With 128 coins struck, the 1896 has the second highest mintage of any Proof Liberty Head double eagle. It is one of the most frequently encountered Proof double eagles from the 1890s, although survivors are very scarce to rare in an absolute sense. Only 40 to 50 coins are believed extant.
