Strike for this issue ranges from sharp to slightly soft around the peripheries on one or both sides. Most survivors are moderately to heavily abraded. In Mint State the 1901-S double eagle displays excellent luster that is usually either satiny or frosty in texture. Although it is scarcer than the generous mintage would suggest, the 1901-S is still obtainable with relative ease up to and including the MS-64 level of preservation. This issue is rare in Gem Mint State, the finest certified being a single MS-66 seen by PCGS.
