History, Information, and Value of 1908 Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1908 Indian Head $5 Gold

The typical Mint State example is sharply struck with excellent luster that is either satiny or frosty. Most of these Philadelphia Mint coins are liberally abraded, especially on the reverse in the field behind the eagle’s head. As the most plentiful issue of this type in Gem Uncirculated condition, the 1908 Indian Half Eagle is relatively easy to locate with overall smooth-looking surfaces.

As the first Philadelphia Mint issue of its type, the 1908 was saved in significant numbers at the time of issue and now ranks as the most readily obtainable Indian half eagle in MS-65 and higher grades. It is also easily acquired in circulated and lower Mint State grades through MS-64. Among the finest known survivors are an NGC MS-68 and a small number of coins in PCGS MS-67 and MS-67+. Also benefiting from its first-year status, the Proof 1908 was ordered in large numbers by contemporary collectors and is now the most frequently encountered Proof Indian half eagle. However, there are no more than 125 Proofs of this date extant. All known Proofs of this date are of the Sand Blast type.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
