History, Information, and Value of 1909 Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1909 Indian Head $5 Gold

The 1909 Indian Half Eagle is well struck and is characterized by good luster when found in Mint State. The typical example is softly frosted, although a few satiny pieces are known. Most are moderately to heavily abraded.

Plentiful by Indian half eagle standards in grades up to and including MS-64, the 1909 Philadelphia Mint coin is scarce in MS-65, yet more available in that grade than most others of this type. Rare in higher grades, the finest examples have been certified MS-66 and MS-66+ by PCGS and NGC. The Sand Blast finish used for 1908 Proofs had not been popular and the contemporary public ordered far fewer Proof half eagles in 1909. As such, this is one of the rarer Proofs of this series, with only 40 to 50 known from a mintage of 78 pieces. Virtually all known examples display a satin finish, although a single Sand Blast Proof is known, first noted in Stack’s 1970 sale of the Gaston DiBello Collection, Part II.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
