History, Information, and Value of 1911-D Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1911-D Indian Head $5 Gold

This is a well struck half eagle characterized by sharp devices and a bold Denver mint mark. On the other hand, the 1911-D Indian Half Eagle is not a highly lustrous issue, with the typical Mint State survivor being somewhat subdued with a noticeably granular texture. Scattered abrasions are the norm. This is one of the most challenging of all 20th century U.S. Mint gold coins to locate with predominantly smooth surfaces.

One of the key date issues in the Indian half eagle series, the 1911-D is scarce even in circulated grades. In Mint State this is the second rarest issue of its type after the 1909-O, and even lower grade examples in the MS-60 to MS-63 range are elusive. The 1911-D is very rare in MS-64 and all but unobtainable any finer. Only a handful of Gems have been certified by PCGS and NGC, including a remarkable MS-65+ at the former service.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
