History, Information, and Value of 1914-D Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1914-D Indian Head $5 Gold

The 1914-D Indian Half Eagle is a sharply struck issue that almost always displays a bold, well-defined mintmark. Luster quality is above average for the type. The surfaces of most Mint State examples are slightly granular, but less so than the typical 1911-D or 1914. The 1914-D is usually encountered with lightly to moderately abraded surfaces.

Despite an identical mintage, the 1914-D is rarer than its identically dated Philadelphia Mint counterpart. Plentiful enough in circulated grades, this Denver Mint issue is among the scarcer Indian half eagles in Mint State, although it is still obtainable with patience in all grades from MS-60 to MS-64. Beginning in MS-64+, there are few examples certified either in that grade or at the MS-65 level. Although clearly a major rarity in the finest Mint State grades, there are a few outstanding survivors of this issue that PCGS and NGC have certified as MS-66 or MS-66+.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
