History, Information, and Value of 1924-S Peace Dollar

Value of 1924 San Francisco Mint Peace Silver Dollar

Many 1924-S Peace dollars were released into circulation and are available today in circulated grades. Uncirculated coins tend to be heavily bagmarked. As is the case for Peace dollars produced at this mint in 1922 and 1923, 1924-S coins are usually poorly struck. Luster is typically dull on this issue. Finding an attractive coin with luster, a good strike, and few marks is very difficult. Do this, and for no extra cost you will get a very special coin!
High End Circulated 1924-S $1 Coins: As with many dates in the series, EF and AU coins are available at just a modest premium above silver value; they are not as common as some of the earlier Philadelphia Mint dates. If AU is your goal look for a coin with no major marks and plenty of retained luster.
Ultra-High Grade 1924-S Peace Dollars Are Rare: You can find an example with no real difficulty in MS-60 to MS-64, but at MS-65 and above the date takes on semi-key status. Its mintage of just over 1.7 million coins suggests a date that can be elusive, and in MS-65 and above it is just that! In fact, just a small handful of pieces have been called MS-66 by the two leading third-party grading services. If you want one of the finest examples of the date extant then MS-65 is your best bet. Strike matters†we can’t stress that enough in this series†so look for a sharp and lustrous specimen with boldly active luster and you’ll be ahead of the crowd. Remarkably, most buyers look at the label when buying and not at the coin itself.

The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1924.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace; S.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
