History, Information, and Value of 1928 Peace Dollar

Value of 1928 Peace Silver Dollar

The 1928 Peace dollar has the lowest mintage in the entire series among regular-issue dates. It is considered one of the key dates, and coins in higher grades usually attract a good price. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, these coins were struck more softly than prior issues from this facility. Overall, the quality and the luster of this issue are average. Many of the coins possess an unappealing gold tone. Beware of purchasing uncertified coins as counterfeits and alterations exist. Some were made by turning the 3 in 1923 into an 8.
Even Circs Sell For Better Than Silver: Many EF and AU examples of the date are held in dealers’ stocks, and prices tend to reflect the current demand for this key date.
1928 Peace Dollars Are Tough Above MS65: Grades of MS-60 to MS-63 are available, but the quality of some pieces in that range drives collectors to a safe bet grade of MS-64 or MS-65 for this key issue. MS-66 pieces are rare, but they do exist for those with enormous patience and a sizeable numismatic budget. This date is difficult to locate with a clear strike and good luster but it can be done. You’ll probably find a coin with these qualities if you are patient, and you may not pay any premium above that for a normal 1928 Peace dollar†just be picky with this date no matter the grade!

The obverse text on the Peace Dollar reads “Liberty; In God We Trvst (Trust); 1928.” The reverse text on the silver dollar reads “United States of America; E Pluribus Unum; One Dollar; Peace.” The obverse of the coin has a bust of a female facing the left with a pointed crown and flowing hair. The reverse of the Peace Dollar has an eagle sitting on a rock in the center with rays in the background.
