This medal is titled the Oath of Allegiance medal. The obverse displays a bust of George Washington facing to the right. The legend reads, “THE CONSTITUTION IS SACREDLY OBLIGATORY ON ALL.” The reverse displays a wreath surrounding a legend which reads, “U.S. MINT OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TAKEN BY THE OFFICERS AND WORKMEN SEPT. 2, 1861. JAS. POLLOCK DIR.” The goal of this medal was to raise money by emphasizing the popularity of George Washington during the Civil War.
