This Assay Medal refers to the recent election of U.S. Grant as President. The obverse of this medal displays Columbia, sitting and wearing a draped cloth as she rests her hand on an American shield. Behind her stands a pole with the liberty cap resting atop it. The reverse displays a laurel wreath with the words, “Let us have peace” on the scroll at the top of the wreath. Inside the wreath is the inscription, “Annual Assay 1869.” According to records, forty silver medals, and ten aluminum medals were requested between 1869-70. An unknown number of copper medals were struck.
