The obverse text on this So-Called Dollar reads To commemorate the first centennial of the City of Middletown, 1784 July 13 1884, Jabez Hamlin, First Mayor and the reverse text is The Seal of the City of Middletown Connecticut. The front side of the coin shows the bust of a man identified as Jabez Hamlin in the center of the coin with a laurel wreath surrounding and lines of text within the beaded border. The backside of the coin depicts mountains with the sun rising above in the center background, a train and horse and buggy in the center foreground, the City Seal of Middletown being shown with text surrounding the outside of the coin.
