W-1 | Original, Large Berries, Proof | C-PO-3, B -1 | Breen dies: 1-A. | Struck for inclusion in Proof sets of the year and easily among the scarcest of the original Proof half cents of the 1840 to 1849 decade. Just 15 to 20 examples of the 1842 Braided Hair Half Cent are thought to exist of this rarity, and examples seldom come to market unless an advanced half cent cabinet is offered. W-1 of 1842 shares its obverse with W-2 and 3 of the year.

W-2 | First Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-4, B-2 | Breen dies: 1-B. | Some 15 to 20 examples of W-2 are thought to exist and some examples are found with high wire rims. Slight doubling at NT of CENT and wreath ribbon.

W-3 | Second Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-19, B-3 | Breen dies: 1-C. | Perhaps 20 to 25 examples are extant in all states of preservation. As with the 1841 Second Restrike variety (W-3), some examples are known on heavy 96.1 grain planchets. Diagonal die lines above RICA on the reverse.
