W-1 | Original, Large Berries, Proof | C-PO-5, B-1 | Breen dies: 1-A. | Perhaps 19 to 24 or so examples of this 1844 Braided Hair Half Cent rarity are extant. As with all the original Proof half cents of the era, the production tally was very small for 1844, hence the shortfall of known specimens today.

W-2 | First Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-6, B-2 | Breen dies: 1-B. | The scarcest of the three varieties of the year, the First Restrike is known by some seven to nine or so examples today. Same obverse as W-1, slight doubling at NT in CENT on the reverse.

W-3 | Second Restrike, Small Berries, Proof | C-SR-21, B-3 | Breen dies: 1-C. | Perhaps 14 to 17 or so examples of W-3 are known today. Same obverse as W-1 and 2, reverse with die lines in the field above RICA.
The obverse text of the Braided Hair Half Cent reads “Liberty, 1844.” The reverse of the coins read “United States of America, Half Cent.” If you are selling your coin, please consider contacting our rare coin experts, or consulting our rare coin price guide.
