History, Information, and Value of 1881-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1881-S $20 Double Eagle

Most 1881-S double eagles are boldly, if not sharply struck throughout, although there are exceptions that show minor softness of detail to the highest elements of Libertys hair and/or a few of the obverse star centrils. Luster quality is excellent for high grade examples, the finish typically satiny or frosty. Many pieces are noticeably abraded, although a few relatively smooth pieces are known. This is a readily obtainable issue in all grades from VF through MS-62, although examples in the latter grade are scarce in the context of the wider Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle series. The 1881-S is rare in MS-63 and extremely rare any finer. One of the finest certified examples hails from the Saddle Ridge Hoard and has been certified MS-64 by PCGS.
