History, Information, and Value of 1891-CC Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1891-CC $20 Double Eagle

The typical 1891-CC is well struck apart from isolated softness of detail to the stars along the lower left and right obverse border. In high grades this issue is also known for above average luster, usually of a satin of frosty nature. Liberally abraded surfaces are the norm at most levels of preservation. The 1891-CC has the lowest mintage in the Carson City Mint double eagle series after only the 1870-CC, and it is scarce to rare in all grades. Most survivors are circulated, often in AU, and true Mint State coins are very rare. All but a few of the Uncirculated examples are confined to the MS-60 to MS-62 grade range, although both PCGS and NGC report having certified a single coin in MS-63.
