The 1897-S double eagle is a sharply struck issue. Mint State examples also display excellent luster in a satin or frosty texture. As with all issues of this type, the typical survivor is moderately to heavily abraded. This is a very common issue in circulated grades that is also easily obtainable in Uncirculated condition through MS-64. Gems are very scarce to rare, however, although there are a couple of remarkable coins graded MS-67 by PCGS that rank as the finest certified.
