History, Information, and Value of 1915 Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1915 Indian Head $5 Gold

Most 1915 Indian Half Eagles are sharply struck with lustrous surfaces that display only a touch of light granularity. The typical survivor is lightly to moderately abraded, although the respectable population of Choice survivors makes locating a relatively smooth-looking 1915 easier than for many other issues in the series.

One of the more common Indian half eagles, the 1915 is readily obtainable in grades through MS-64. It is rare in Gem Mint State; the finest known examples include a few premium quality coins in PCGS MS-65+. The Sand Blast Proof 1915 Philadelphia Mint coin is the final issue in the Proof Indian half eagle series and its mintage of 75 pieces is the lowest for its type. Survivors are rare in all grades with perhaps just 40 to 50 coins known.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.

The Indian Gold $5 coin is a collector favorite. These coins can be very difficult to grade since they are the only United States Mint coin to have a sunken in design rather than a raised design.
