This is the second medal to display an image of Grover Cleveland on the obverse. The bust of Cleveland faces to the right. The obverse legend states, “The Mint of the United States Annual Assay 1887”. Reverse displays Justice, standing in front of the Philadelphia Mint building, holding her light above her head. The legend reads, “The torch of honest shines on the coinage.” There are some 1887 medals that use a different die for the reverse and possibly some medals may exist with an 1887 obverse and a 1886 reverse.
