History, Information, and Value of 1869-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle
Value of 1869-S $20 Double Eagle
The typical 1869-S double eagle is softly struck, particularly on the obverse, with moderately to heavily abraded surfaces. Most survivors no longer retain any of the original mint luster, but when present this feature can be very pleasing in a satin to softly frosted texture. This is a plentiful issue by the standards of the type, although only in lower circulated grades through EF. In AU the 1869-S is scarce, yet obtainable with patience, while Uncirculated survivors are very rare and seldom grade finer than MS-61. The finest known are a small number of Choice pieces in MS-64 listed at PCGS and NGC.
