History, Information, and Value of 1870 Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1870 $20 Double Eagle

This is a well-produced issue with most examples overall boldly, if not sharply defined. Softness of strike, when present, tends to be minor and is often confined to the high points of Liberty’s hair in and around the central obverse. A few minimally abraded survivors are known, but they are rare relative to the typically encountered example with noticeable marks on one or both sides. High grade pieces show excellent luster that ranges from frosty to semi-prooflike. In high grades the 1870 is among the more underrated double eagles of the Type 2 Liberty Head design. However, enough VF and EF examples have survived that the issue carries little to no premium above common date issues in those grades. At the AU level the 1870 double eagle is scarce, while in Mint State it is rare and seldom offered any finer than MS-62. A PCGS MS-63+ and NGC MS-64 are the finest certified examples. The Proof 1870 is very rare, as are all Proof Type 2 Liberty Head double eagles. Fewer than 15 coins are believed extant from a mintage of just 35 pieces.
