History, Information, and Value of 1882-S Gold Liberty Double Eagle

Value of 1882-S $20 Double Eagle

This is not one of the better-produced San Francisco Mint issues among early Type 3 Liberty Head double eagles. The typical 1882-S double eagle is softly struck over elements of Libertys portrait, one or more obverse stars, and in the center of the reverse. Surface abrasions are plentiful, although this is usually offset in high grade survivors by pleasing satin or frosty luster. The 1882-S is a common issue in both circulated and lower Mint State grades through MS-62. This issue is scarce to rare in Choice Uncirculated, however, and the finest certified example is a PCGS MS-64+.
