This is not a well struck issue, and it is common to see softness of detail over the obverse stars and in the centers on both sides. Most survivors are liberally abraded, a feature that can interfere with appreciation of otherwise pleasing luster on Mint State examples. Plentiful in circulated grades as well as in the MS-60 to MS-63 range, the 1889-S double eagle is scarce in MS-64, yet obtainable with patience at that level. Gems are very rare, with the finest certified a MS-65+ by PCGS.
