The 1904 is almost always encountered with a bold to sharp strike and, in Mint State, pleasing luster in either a satin or frosty texture. A few semi-prooflike examples are known, but they are rare. Surfaces range from liberally abraded to relatively smooth. This is the most common Liberty Head double eagle, and by a large margin. Examples are plentiful in grades through MS-65, and even in MS-66 the 1904 double eagle can be obtained with relative ease. The small number of exceptional coins graded MS-67 by PCGS and NGC are the finest certified. Very scarce to rare in all grades, the Proof 1904 has an extant population of 60 to 75 coins.
