History, Information, and Value of 1908-D No Motto St. Gaudens $20 Gold

Value of 1908-D No Motto St. Gaudens $20 Gold

The typical example is well struck with overall bold definition, although minor softness of detail is often seen on the obverse at the Capitol building and/or over Libertys chest and midsection. Some coins also display incomplete definition to the eagles leg feathers on the reverse. The 1908-D No Motto St. Gaudens has very good to excellent luster that is typically of a satin or softly frosted texture. Mint State survivors are usually moderately to heavily abraded making this a more difficult issue to locate with smooth surfaces.
This is the scarcest issue of the No Motto design type, although examples are still readily obtainable in grades through MS-64. In MS-65 the 1908-D No Motto is elusive, while in higher grades it is extremely rare. PCGS reports two grading events at the MS-66+ level, the finest certified for the issue.
