History, Information, and Value of 1908-S Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1908-S Indian Head $5 Gold

The 1908-S Indian Half Ealge is one of the most consistently attractive Indian half eagles in Mint State and is almost always found with a sharp to full strike and excellent luster. Most Uncirculated San Francisco Mint survivors are softly frosted, but several satiny pieces are known. The Mint State population is fairly evenly spread between moderately abraded coins and those that display attractive surfaces.

With a mintage of fewer than 100,000 coins, the 1908-S is one of the scarcer Indian half eagles in circulated grades. Mint State coins are very scarce to rare even in lower grades through MS-64. On the other hand, a fair number of Gems have survived. Many of the finest 1908-S half eagles extant can be traced to the Virgil Brand hoard dispersed by Manfra, Tordella & Brookes (also the source for several high quality examples of the 1908-D). In an absolute sense, of course, the 1908-S is rare at and above MS-65, with Superb Gems particularly elusive. A virtually pristine MS-68 certified by PCGS ranks among the finest known.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
