History, Information, and Value of 1909-D Indian Gold Half Eagle

Value of 1909-D Indian Head $5 Gold

Most 1909-D Indian Half Eagles are sharply to fully struck with excellent, usually softly frosted luster. A few satiny pieces are known, but they are in the distinct minority among Mint State survivors. Surface quality varies for the issue, although most examples are moderately to heavily abraded. Patience will yield a relatively smooth-looking coin in MS-64, but few 1909-D half eagles approach perfection.

The 1909-Denver Mint has the highest mintage in the Indian half eagle series. This, along with the discovery of several small to moderate-size hoards in the 1970s and 1980s, has made it the most available issue of its type in Mint State. In fact, the 1909-D is the half eagle most often chosen by collectors seeking a single coin to represent this design in a type set or wider collection. While circulated coins abound in the numismatic market, most buyers opt for an example in MS-62, MS-63 or MS-64. Perhaps surprisingly for an issue that is common in an absolute sense, although in keeping with the standards of the type, the 1909-D is very scarce in MS-65. Rare in higher grades, some of the finest known survivors have been certified MS-66 by PCGS and NGC.

The text on the Indian Gold Half Eagle reads as follows. Obverse: LIBERTY; Date; BLP | Reverse: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; E PLURIBUS UNUM; IN GOD WE TRUST; FIVE DOLLAR.
