History, Information, and Value of 1909-D St. Gaudens $20 Gold

Value of 1909-D St. Gaudens $20 Gold

While most 1909-D St. Gaudens double eagles are boldly to sharply struck, the issue as a whole has only average luster, the texture either satiny or softly frosted. The typical Mint State survivor is liberally abraded.
As the mintage might imply, this is a key date in all grades. Even in lower Mint State grades through MS-64 the 1909-D is scarce; many such examples entered the numismatic market from European and Latin American banks beginning in the 1960s. Gems remain rare, while rarer still are the handful of Superb Gems in MS-67 that constitute the finest certified. One of the Superb Gems known to PCGS traces its provenance to Bowers and Ruddys 1982 sale of the Louis El. Eliasberg United States Gold Coin Collection.
