History, Information, and Value of 1909-S St. Gaudens $20 Gold

Value of 1909-S St. Gaudens $20 Gold

The typical 1909-S St. Gaudens is sharply struck with pleasing frosty luster that can sometimes be a bit granular. With most Mint State survivors having entered the market from overseas hoards, it should come as no surprise that this issue is almost always offered with noticeably abraded surfaces.
Thanks to the discovery of thousands of coins in foreign banks, this double eagle is plentiful in Uncirculated grades through MS-64. Gems in MS-65 are scarce, yet obtainable with patience, while in higher grades the 1909-S is rare. Finest certified honors go to the single MS-67 listed at PCGS.
