Value of 1910 St. Gaudens $20 Gold

When it comes to the 1910 St. Gaudens, sharp striking detail and lustrous surfaces are the norm among Mint State examples. Also typical, however, are liberally abraded surfaces.
This issue has the highest mintage among Philadelphia Mint double eagles from the 1908 Motto through the 1920. With large numbers of coins having been found in foreign banks it is readily obtainable in grades up to and including MS-64. Like so many other Saint-Gaudens double eagles, the 1910 is rare in Gem Mint State; in this case the finest certified coin is a PCGS MS-66+. With the exception of a unique Sand Blast specimen, all Proofs of this date are of the Satin Finish type. The mintage _ 167 pieces _ is the highest in the Proof Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, but that figure is misleading as many examples were destroyed at the Mint when they failed to sell to contemporary collectors. No more than 75 survivors are accounted for, and perhaps as few as 50.
