This well-produced issue is typically encountered with a sharp strike and bountiful mint frost. A small percentage of survivors exhibit a more satiny texture, and such pieces are also attractive. Most Mint State survivors are liberally abraded.
The 1913-D St. Gaudens is one of the scarcer Denver Mint double eagles from the early to mid-1910s, but is still readily obtainable in grades through MS-64. Gems in MS-65 are scarcer, yet also relatively easy to acquire. Above that level, however, the 1913-D is very rare. One of the finest known examples is the Dallas Bank Collection specimen auctioned jointly by Stacks and Sothebys in October 2001, which has since been certified MS-66 by PCGS.
