One of the most consistently attractive Saint-Gaudens double eagles, most examples of the 1923-D St. Gaudens are sharply struck with bountiful mint luster. Surface preservation is also well above average with a generous supply of minimally abraded survivors.
One of the few mintmarked double eagles from the 1920s that saw widespread exportation at the time of issue, the 1923-D is also the most common in todays market. Thousands of examples have been repatriated. The 1923-D is readily obtainable in Mint State grades through MS-66. There are even a fair number of Superb Gems certified in MS-67, although such coins are scarce and acquiring one will usually require patience and persistence. A single MS-68 is graded higher at NGC, the finest certified for the issue.
